Why do I need an Apprentice?
Due to health conditions, I no longer have the ability to do the things I use to, (I have no energy or stamina) so I need someone to help me do those things. This is a temporary condition (hopefully) as I will be having a LVAD implanted to restore the blood flow to my body, currently not being provided by my heart. After this surgery I am required to have someone around me 24/7/365 until I fully recover. My neighbor helps with these duties, but you will be my Primary Care Facilitator - which means we'll work together, you do the physical activities, and I'll teach you the rest of what you need to know to become a successful Picker!
Hopefully after the LVAD surgery (about 6 months or so) I will become a candidate for a heart transplant. After which, I should regain all my strength and stamina in time.
Please Note:
I am in no way an invalid - While I'll need help with lifting, cleaning, and any other physical activity - I am fully capable of taking care of myself in all other aspects of my life. It is the Doctors that require I have someone available -- Just in case! And they won't proceed with the steps needed to make the LVAD or transplant happen until I have that someone in place.
What will be required of the Apprentice?
1.
You will need to be trained by the hospital on how to provide help to me if there is a problem with the LVAD unit (very unlikely but possible). The hospital provides the training over a 5 day period, Monday - Friday.
2.
Be a non smoker!
3.
Foremost - the desire to learn about the world of antiques and collectables.
4.
You'll help maintain the household - in and out.
5.
You'll go with me to auctions, garage sales, estate sales, etc.
6.
You need to be a licensed driver.
7.
A commitment for a minimum of 3 years.
8.
You MUST be reliable - keep your word, and don't expect me to accept excuses.
9.
Mechanical ability is required. You don't need a diploma, just the aptitude, and the willingness to try!
10.
Wood working skills are a plus -- but I can train.
11.
You must be able to listen & learn. Your opinion is valued - but mine is law!
12.
Willingness to put in long hours. Working any hour of the day or night.
13.
Get your hands dirty.
14.
Pick up and move heavy items. I can help - but it is limited.
15.
The cleanup of the items purchased, if needed.
16.
The restoration of items purchased, if needed.
17.
The refinishing of items purchased, if needed
18.
The modernizing of items, if needed.
19.
And a willingness to work together to achieve a common goal.
